Celiac Disease and Anemia
Celiac disease has been mistaken for many
other diseases owing to the similarity in their symptoms. Especially celiacs
have been mistaken for anemic in many cases. People do not come to doctors
for wheat allergies and hence doctors presume it to be something like
anemia. But wheat intolerance has itself resulted
in poor health conditions in the country.
Anemia is a condition, where people lack the required amount of red blood
cells (RBCs) in the blood. RBCs are responsible for the transport of oxygen
between different tissues, muscles and organs in your body. When there
is a lack of RBCs, the oxygen transported is reduced and this impairs
many functions of the body. The symptoms of anemia, which is also similar
to that found in celiac disease, consist of the following.
· Headaches
· Chest Pain
· Cognitive difficulties
· Lethargy
· Irregular or speedy heartbeat
· Coldness or numbness in feet and hands
· Shortness of breath
· Dizziness
· Pale skin
On seeing you reporting all the above symptoms, the doctor generally presumes
that you are suffering from anemia. In case of you experiencing any of
these symptoms, you need to inform and consult a doctor as soon as possible.
The diagnosis will seem like anemia to a greater extent, since anemia
is so common among many people.
However, if you experience these symptoms of anemia
or you had already been diagnosed to have anemia, and you have not considered
the alternative of wheat allergy or celiac disease, then it is greatly
recommended to confirm you do not have either by going through all its
diagnostic tools.
Another thing you need to account for is whether any of your family members
have had a history with celiac disorder or at least the symptoms of celiac
disease or that which you are experiencing. Have that family member already
been diagnosed with celiac disease?
If yes, there are many possibilities that you may also have the same.
If no, but you have the similar symptoms as found in your family, but
not diagnosed to be any disorder, then you need to share this information
with your doctor as well as your family members.
In the meanwhile, try eating only fresh vegetables (raw vegetables is
preferred), fruits, etc. try avoiding processed foods and also wheat and
its products for a short while. See if the symptoms persist even after
undertaking these steps or not. By doing so, celiacs can confirm their
disorder since the symptoms disappear in such a diet.
